About Highland Coast to Coast

Highland Coast to Coast walking holiday

Here’s a lovely, continuous route leading from the Beauly Firth at Inverness, via Loch Ness, the hidden hamlet of Tomich and through the length of Glen Affric, to Loch Duich on the west coast; a trek along one of Scotland’s most varied and spectacular crossings.

As you will be staying in one of the remotest hostels in the country for a night, minimal light weight backpacking is required for two days to let you really savour Glen Affric’s wild sanctuary.

Highland Coast to Coast - Brief Itinerary:

Day 1: Meet at Stirling and travel by mini-bus up to Inverness and our start point at South Kessock on the Beauly Firth. After a bit of dolphin spotting, start our journey along the Caledonian Canal at first, to reach and follow the Great Glen Way at far as Blackfold area; ~15km. Get picked up there and taken to the hostel at Bearnock centre where we stay for 4 nights.

Day 2: Return to yesterday’s finish and continue a\long the Great Glen Way as far as Abriachan. From there head across the moor past Loch Glanaidh to drop down to Drumnadrochit. Then by paths and forest tracks to near Balnain and end of our day; ~21km.

Day 3: Returning to Balnain, we then follow old forest and moorland paths and tracks to weave a way to the attractive wee village of Tomich; 20km.

Day 4: And from there, we head over to stunning Glen Affric to walk along the side of Loch Beinn a’Mheadhoin to the end of the public road; 14km. If there’s time we can do touristy things in and around Drumnadrochit, or do some monster spotting!

Day 5: After a leisurely start and a repack of our gear to include overnight things, a small sleeping bag and some food, we launch out into the wild to walk the remainder of Glen Affric over the next 2 days. Tonight’s destination is Glen Affric hostel; ~14km.

Day 6: Continue on towards the coast by going over the pass into Glen Licht and following it to Morvich and the sea at Loch Duich, thus completing our crossing of Scotland; 20km. Spend the night at Ratagan on the shores of the loch.

Day 7: After packing up we head back to Stirling, via Spean Bridge, Dalwhinnie, Pitlochry and Perth, to reach there by 16.00.

6 nights hostel accommodation – 4 nights in small rooms in the luxury independent hostel at Bearnock, 2 nights in bunk dormitories at Glen Affric and Ratagan that are managed by Hostelling Scotland. Rooms are usually separate for men and women and may be shared with other guests. However, there is a slight possibility that rooms will be mixed. Bed linen is provided but customers need to bring their own towel, soap, etc. Hot showers are available each night.

All meals from dinner day 1 to breakfast day 7 are included. With the exception of day dinner 5 and breakfast day 6 meals are prepared by our own support manager with a wee bit of help from the group with preparation and clearing up. When at Affric hostel it will be necessary for us to carry food for dinner and breakfast plus our packed lunches. Help in preparing these meals would be appreciated. Special diets can be catered for if notified in advance.
