National Parks Explorer walking holiday

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, a national park of many sea and inland lochs, forests, hills and mountains, blended together in a very picturesque way. Compare with the land-locked Cairngorms’ national park, the largest one in the UK, with spectacular high mountains, numerous lochs, and large areas of wilderness. Both contain an abundance of wildlife, walking and exploring opportunities without number.

This trip’s a bit of a mystery tour, with the guide having a free hand to choose, within the grade and after consultation with the group, what the best mountain and lower level walks are for the day. From three different bases, Callander, Aviemore and Braemar, the group will venture forth to get better acquainted with, and to absorb, the very different surroundings that make these Parks special. You’ll come back wanting more.

National Parks Explorer - Brief Itinerary:

Day 1: Assemble in Stirling then head to Callander, our base for the first 3 nights. A small hill nearby, from which the surrounding Trossachs can be spied will be our target for the rest of the day. After that we head to our accommodation.

Day 2: A visit to this national park wouldn’t be complete without a wander up Ben Lomond. The elevated location gives great views down along the Highland Boundary Fault separating the Lowlands from the Highlands.

Day 3: Today might involve a climb up to a high pass and a wander along an undulating plateau to descend into another glen beyond. Great views, interesting wildlife and evidence of transhumance of earlier times.

Day 4: This morning pack up to head north to the Cairngorms’, via Loch Tay and the Pass of Drumochter. When near to Aviemore we’ll possibly explore the Inchriach Forest around Loch an Eilean and Loch Gamhna before finding our accommodation.

Day 5: A possibility and the classic circuit would be the Round of the Northern Corries. From a high start, a relatively gentle approach takes us to Cairn Lochan, round the plateau edge to Cairngorm itself, with magnificent views on a clear day to the glacier sculpted interior.

Day 6: Pack up again to head to the eastern side of the ‘Gorms this time. The journey is a classic in itself, over the Tomintoul to Cockbridge road dropping down into Deeside near Balmoral. A short distance takes us to Braemar, the final base. There will be time to stretch our legs for a while on the way round.

Day 7: So many choices from multiple mountain classics, wonderful pine woods, and wide open glens. Collectively you’ll decide what would be the highlight of the trip for you.

Day 8: Pack up one more time and make our way back to Stirling, arriving there by ~13.00.

Accommodation:

7 nights’ guest house accommodation (3xCallander, 2x Aviemore, plus 2x Braemar) with full Scottish breakfasts included. Rooms are shared except when a single room supplement has been paid and are ensuite where possible.

Meals:

Packed lunches and evening meals are your own responsibility. For evening meals, you will be staying somewhere within walking distance of restaurants.
