About C-N-Do Scotland
In early 1984, Margaret Porter and Dorothy Breckenridge established C-N-Do Scotland. Combining years of experience and eternal enthusiasm for the Scottish outdoors and the philosophy of Goethe, inspired us to share our enthusiasm for, and love of the wildlife, natural beauty and landscapes of Scotland. "If we can do these walks then just about anyone can do them as well” - and so it has been proved by the many hundreds and hundreds we have introduced to this lifelong addiction (but a healthy one mind you!).
Since then our team has grown but the ethos and philosophy flourishes, nurtured by the experience of every walk achieved or mountain climbed, or distant vista absorbed.
Our ethos has and always will be - small and sustainable, care for and empathy with our environment, sympathetic and informal but highly professional leadership, a desire to share our knowledge of Scotland, all it’s natural things and that something extra special to make the whole walking experience enjoyable and fun. Traveling slowly through the landscape is best way to be at one with it.
Our Courses for walkers are delivered with sympathetic instruction. Our philosophy is for YOU to achieve and learn the practical skills to look after yourself in the hills, to gain the confidence and inspiration to expand your outdoor horizons. At the same time, we always hope to raise awareness and, hopefully, a lifelong empathy with the outdoor environment, and a duty of care towards the landscapes and environment of future generations.
About the Owners
‘A hobby gone wrong’ is the usual answer when questioned about how it all started, and our passion for Scotland and outdoory things has been described as ‘missionary zeal’ by one national newspaper reporter.
I have a few ‘bits of paper’ that say I was a teacher, an international fencer, an instructor of various outdoor activities in previous lives, along with ones that say I am an international and winter mountain leader, a transport manager, etc, etc., but none for the chief cook and bottle washer, oddly enough!
I’m the current chair of the National Navigation Award Scheme and my local community development trust, and keep bees. That all gives me quite a buzz!
Seeing and Doing allows me to share my passion for the outdoors, together with my love of all things Scottish. I’m happy helping folk to experience a wild piece of Scotland, or equally introducing people to navigation skills.
I have a long-standing involvement with Scottish environmental, access and conservation issues.
Amongst others, I am a Winter and International Mountain Leader, am good at ‘juggling’ (keeping lots of balls in the air at the same time), and recently started learning to play the fiddle which is great fun.
All our leaders are properly qualified and experienced for the activities of which they are in charge. Training and assessment is through the MTUK recognised schemes of Hill & Moorland Leader, Summer Mountain Leader, Winter Mountain Leader and International Mountain Leader. All our walking guides hold one or more of these nationally recognised qualifications.
In addition, there are staff training days and weekends to keep ourselves up to speed on personal and leadership skills, safety and group management, first aid, environmental and access issues, always aiming to improve what and how we can do things to ensure YOU enjoy seeing and doing Scotland with us. Our team's passion for Scotland, the countryside and the people has never been surpassed. Their real enthusiasm for the environment of Scotland is quietly infectious.
