Fisherfield Wilderness Trek

Grade: Grade 3 - Grade 4 (Grade explanation)

This vast wilderness beckons. Our journey through the fastnesses of Letterewe and Fisherfield takes us from the shores of Loch Maree to the sea by mountain passes, lonely lochs, and beneath rocky sandstone ramparts. Explore a mountain wilderness like none other in Europe. Reach Carnmore, that most spectacular of locations. Then head round to Strath na Shealga right in amongst mountain giants, before wandering back via Loch an Nid and the Heights of Kinlochewe. Weather depending there could be chances to pop up to the high tops during this wild camping, backpacking trek.

Journeying through wild or remote landscapes is not the sole preserve of a hardy mountaineer, it is well within the scope of many walkers who have a (hidden) streak of adventurous curiosity and a willingness to have a go. The journey will be more physically demanding than a day walk but the rewards can be life changing.

NB: Due to the remote nature of the trip and lack of easy escape routes, participants should ensure that they have a high enough level of fitness to enable them to complete at least the linear parts of this holiday in full. Although the distances are not long and we have all day to enjoy the route folk do have to have the ability to carry 30lbs or so on a daily basis, not impossible but some practise is advised. The terrain covered is mainly on paths and tracks, which may be rough, rocky and wet at times plus there is some un-pathed terrain

Brief Itinerary for the Fisherfield Wilderness Trek:

Day 1: Equipment distribution / check at C-N-Do office. After sorting out gear from the store and a brief scene setting for this special journey we travel by mini-bus to Kinlochewe. Start our walk from there towards and along Loch Maree, one of the most scenic lochs in the mid north west of Scotland. A suitable camping spot will be found about 6 miles / 10km away (ascent ~200m).

Day 2: Break camp and walk along towards Letterewe to pick up the route through the Bealach Mheinidh to get our first glimpse of the Fionn Loch and Carnmore which must rank as one of the most spectacular mountain locations in Scotland (~8½ miles / 13km, 650m ascent). Pitch camp for the night and enjoy a roam around the area in evening.

Day 3: Continue our way, skirting the ramparts of A’Mhaighdean, to spy the towering pinnacles of Beinn Dearg Mor, hidden away in its mountain fastness. A descent down through Gleann na Muice takes round to Strath na Sealga and a scenic camping spot within sight of an Teallach (~9 miles / 14km, 350m ascent).

Day 4: Today we continue round by Achneigie, up past Loch an Nid and over to camp on the sandy shores of Lochan Fada.(9mls / 15km, 350m ascent), a magical spot.

Day 5: Pack up for the last time and head back to Kinlochewe and the end of a memorable trek (8ml / 12km, 50m ascent).
