Fannichs & Deargs Raid walking holiday

About the Fannichs & Deargs Raid

Fannichs & Deargs Raid walking holiday

This is the chance to savour two groups of high mountains in the northwest. Staying up high removes the need to continually climb back up. Over the trip it saves some 25mls and 2500m ascent! Our route will wander along the great ridges of the Fannichs, to pick off the eight high tops, enjoying two high camps.

After a night in the valley under a permanent roof and with supplies replenished, head over to claim the four Deargs and Seana Bhraigh on the other side with one more night camping.

Please note: Backpacking and wild camping are required on this walking holiday.

Fitness Levels

Due to the remote nature of the trip and lack of easy escape routes, participants should ensure that they have a high enough level of fitness to enable them to complete at least the linear parts of this holiday in full.

Although the distances are not long and we have all day to enjoy the route folk do have to have the ability to carry 30lbs or so on a daily basis - not impossible but some practice is advised. The terrain covered is mainly on paths and tracks, which may be rough, rocky and wet at times plus there is some un-pathed terrain.

Fannichs & Deargs Raid Brief Itinerary:

Day 1: Assemble at our Stirling base, where there will be a short briefing session, equipment check and issue. After that we head to Loch Glascarnoch, via Inverness. From their we head up to our first camp somewhere near Loch Gorm. (~5ml / 8km, ~300m ascent).

Day 2: Today we make a start on the adventure by heading out to An Coileachan, then along the great central ridge of the range over Meall Gorm, out to Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich, back over Sgurr Mor and onward to find a camping spot convenient for claiming Meall a’Chrasgaidh (~10mls / 16km, ~1220m ascent)

Day 3: Staying on the main ridge as it swings south over Sgurr nan Clach Geala to its end at Sgurr nan Each, we then head for the two outliers, Sgurr Breac and A’Chailleach before dropping right down and round to the road (~10mls / 16km, ~1000m ascent). From here we drive down to comfortable bunk accommodation, hot showers and some relaxation.

Day 4: After sorting out kit and packing fresh supplies, head the short distance to Inverlael, the start point for the next two day jaunt. From here head up through Gleann a’Mhadaidh, along the old Gleann Beag right of way, as far as the vicinity of SH806 to pitch camp. From here it’s not far to pop up to Seanna Bhraigh and back. (~11mls / 18km, ~1000m ascent).

Day 5: And to finish with, after an early start, we romp over the four remaining big ones, Eididh nan Clach Geala, Meall na Ceapraichean, Cona Meall and Beinn Dearg. Fantastic! From there head down Gleann na Sguaib to the road. (~11m / 18km, ~900m ascent). From there we drive back to Stirling

Accommodation:

3 nights wild camping in two or three person tents provided by C~N~Do and 1 night in bunk accommodation. As tent sharing is usually less onerous from an equipment carrying point of view, if you book as an individual, we will match you up with a tent partner(s) of the same sex. Stoves, gas and pots are also provided. You need to bring your own sleeping bag and mat, although these can be hired if necessary.

Meals:

Food for all meals, from picnic lunch day 1 to picnic lunch day 5, is included. Meals are prepared by participants in tent groups. Special diets can be catered for if notified in advance. Evening meal day 3 and breakfast day 4 will be prepared communally from food provided in a well equipped kitchen.
