Environmental Ethos - What can you do?

Here's what you could do to help. Reduce – reuse - recycle

Here's what you can do and encourage others to do

  • Conserve Energy – Reduce energy by switching off lights and closing windows if the heating is on. The Energy Saving Trust (www.energysavingtrust.org) provides information on what you can do at home.
  • Give the Car a Rest – Leave the car behind, if only one day a week. Walk, cycle or use public transport.
  • Shop Local – Use local products and services, they give you a flavour of the area and support local communities. Scotland has some fantastic producers of food, drink arts and crafts. Ask us or have a look at the resources in the wee library area.
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – Try to avoid overly packaged goods and say no to that extra carrier bag. Join you local 'Freecycle' network. Try and recycle any waste that you have. (www.freecycle.org/group/UK/Scotland/Stirling City)
  • Be Water Wise – Try to use water wisely. Turn off taps when brushing your teeth. Have a shower instead of a bath. (www.water-guide.org.uk)
  • Respect Nature – Help to look after your wildlife and landscapes by following the Leave No Trace and Scottish Outdoor Access Code ethics, leave no litter, guard against fire, take responsibility for your own actions in the outdoor, respect wildlife and landscapes (www.outdooraccess-scotland.com)
  • Support Green Tourism Businesses  - Support those businesses which are actively practicing environmental responsibility and are members of the GTBS  (www.green-business.co.uk)

Whatever you do, enjoy the landscapes, wildlife and nature. Do something good for them each day, repayment is never ending.

At Home

  • Buy local, with less packaging
  • Reuse you bags
  • Recycle or use your local freecycle network
  • Plant a fruit tree

  • Plant native species and leave a 'wild' bit for the birds and beasties
  • Grow your own veg and fruit or try an allotment
  • Put up nest boxes
  • Walk and cycle where you can or use public transport
  • Check out your energy use at home and reduce it
  • Check out your water use and reduce it
  • Take part in some conservation projects
  • Get a friend or colleague out walking
  • Encourage your work to be more environmentally friendly
  • Lobby your local and national politicians to practice what they preach

Get out and enjoy the fresh air and beauty of your local landscapes.

We can all do our little bit - and it can be fun!
